This year is the first year I’ve ever decorated for Valentine’s day. Mainly because I’m so excited to be in my new house and I also have a ton of storage space in the basement that is currently empty and waiting to be filled. That’s a good reason, right? I can see myself using this decoration for many Februaries to come and honestly, it’s so pretty it may stay around a little longer before it goes away til next year.
On the note of love, I think Cupid knew what he was doing when he introduced me to Jason. He will walk down every aisle of the craft store with me and it almost seems like he enjoys it as much as I do. I can spend a decent chunk of time in a Michael’s and find new things every time. The other day I found this beautiful decorative key for $5 and some gorgeous Valentine themed paper flowers. I didn’t really know how it all would come together but when I was walking in my sun room and saw this random wood board on the floor (I think Jason rescued it from one of his construction jobs). I didn’t need any further permission to get my craft on.
- Decorative key from Michael’s for $5
- Paper flowers
- Wood stain spray
- Vintage white acrylic paint
- small brush (not pictured)
- hot glue gun
The first thing I did was stain the wood, I used a wood stain spray that dried in a few minutes so I didn’t have to wait very long to get started.
Next, I set up my layout. I played around with different places to arrange the key and flowers. I knew I wanted a white heart in the background so I cut out a heart shape from a piece of paper. I actually had to cut it shorter a few different times to get it to the perfect size. Then I traced around the heart-shaped paper with a pen to make it easy to get a nice symmetrical shape with my paint. The paint I chose was a vintage white color. It gave this piece exactly the rustic look I was going for. I smudged a few edges out with white paint to give it an older look. I wasn’t planning on adding any paint outside the heart, but sometimes you get ideas in the spur of the moment and just roll with it!
After the paint dried, I used my hot glue gun (which happens to be pink) to attach the flowers and the key. It has been hanging out on the dresser in my master bedroom and it fits in so well next to my pink flowers and vase from Target.
This is the end result? Can you see why I’m happy to have it be around for awhile? 🙂
And yes it’s totally normal to take your crafts out in the snow and take pictures of them, although I’m sure all you guys know that 😉
Have a great day and stay tuned for more crafts.
